What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea is a common disorder in which you have one or more breathing interruptions or blockages while you sleep. In the condition known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea, the throat can close, leading to cessation of breathing. Apnea is defined as “a cessation of airflow for at least 10 seconds.” People with sleep apnea stop breathing while they sleep, sometimes hundreds of times a night, sometimes for a minute or longer. Sleep apnea affects 25 million Americans of all ages.

Diagnosis and Treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Diagnosis is based on the results of an overnight sleep study, called a Polysomnogram (PSG). Other factors in determining OSA are patient evaluation and history.

What is a Dental Appliance?

A dental appliance is a small resin device, similar to an orthodontic retainer or an athletic mouthguard. It is worn in the mouth during sleep to prevent the soft throat tissues from collapsing and obstructing the airway. Dr. Blumberg, can design, construct, and fit these special appliances to his patients’ individual situations and conditions. In recent clinical studies, physicians and dentists have found that, in a majority of patients, a well-made, well fitted dental appliance will effectively reduce or eliminate snoring, and significantly relieve symptoms of mild and moderate OSA.
